The TCT is excited to offer scholarships to the following university students, to support their continued theatre studies.

The high level of applications meant that the assessment process was particularly competitive. The selection panel was delighted that so many young Tasmanians clearly have a bright future in the professional theatre industry.

A huge congratulations to:

Jack Oates Pryor

Jack has been involved in theatre since first performing in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Year Four, and is now completing a Bachelor of Arts, with a double major in Theatre and Performance and German, and Bachelor of Laws through UTAS.

Since moving from Melbourne in 2019, he has had the privilege to perform with a number of Tasmanian theatre companies including Launceston Musical Society, IO Performance, Three River Theatre, and PLoT Theatre Society. Jack is also experienced in various off-stage roles with other companies such as Fawkes Theatre Company and Blue Cow Theatre.

There is a myriad of reasons why Jack continues to love theatre, such as theatre’s aptitude for emotive and cathartic storytelling, and its capacity for transformative empathy. Jack is honoured and grateful to be one of the 2023 TCT Scholarship recipients and looks forward to the theatre journey yet to come.

Lucinda Smith

Lucinda is an actor and voice artist currently based in Boorloo/Perth, completing her final year of studying a Bachelor of Arts (Acting) at WAAPA.

Born and raised in Lutruita/Tasmania by a family of creatives, her passion for performance began with her big break as Rooster Hannigan in her Year Six production of Annie (to much critical and commercial acclaim). She has since spent the subsequent years following her artistic expression, from plays to musicals to choirs to time in nature.

Lucinda is also a massive fan of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Alex Tye

Growing up in Hobart, Alex fell in love with theatre through his school’s drama and musical theatre programs at Rose Bay High School and Rosny College. This led Alex to immerse himself within the Tasmanian theatre community by performing with companies such as Musical Theatre Crew, ExitLeft, and Old Nick Theatre Company’s summer school program where he developed his passion for storytelling through singing and acting.

Alex has spent the last three years studying a Bachelor of Musical Theatre at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University where he was fortunate enough to play roles such as JD in Heathers: The Musical and Dupree in Cry-Baby. Whilst studying, Alex has also had the opportunity to work professionally including playing Andrew Shelford in the developmental workshop of Round The Twist: The Musical and being cast in Queensland Theatre’s production of The Sunshine Club.

More recently, you can catch Alex backing up some of Australia’s biggest artists as a part of the Quartet in the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols on Channel 9 this December. Alex is so grateful for Theatre Council of Tasmania’s support as he reaches graduation and ventures into the Australian performing industry.
